Voles, just like rats and mice, are rodents, possessing similar features as other rodents. Physically, the length of an adult vole spans between 3 and 5 inches, and this includes their tail. Their nose is short and sensitive; their fore and hind limbs are short; their body is stout. To find food, voles have to burrow through the ground, and may come to the surface occasionally. In fact the meadow vole spends most of its life on the surface.

Voles go by so many names: pine mice, meadow mice and field mice are common names. Unlike moles, voles are herbivorous, preferring to feed on tubers, nutritious grasses, seeds and fruits than on insects.

The female vole can produce as many as 30 pups in a year. It takes her 3 weeks days to go from initial mating to giving birth. Sexual maturity is reached after 40 days both for the male and female. The ideal lifespan of a vole is 2 years.

To stay off the radar of predators, voles set up their nests in grassy areas with lots of bushes. That way, predators like hawks and snakes will have a hard time reaching them.

How to identify the activities of Voles

To keep away voles, it’s important to learn how to identify their activity. The first thing voles will do when they visit a yard is to set up runways on the surface. Their runway is about two inches in width. When they burrow, they often create holes sporadically, and these holes serve as getaway points. More also, voles will always trim down grasses surrounding their nests.

If you see these signs, it’s a dead giveaway that voles are around.

How to Identify Damages caused by Voles

Moles spend most of their doing two things; searching for food and a mate. And, they can feed on just about any with roots. Bark of trees and shrubs are good snacks during acute food shortages. When they are not feeding on the bark of young trees, they are eating up roots of plants and tuber crops. This destructive feeding of theirs can ruin a garden or yard pretty quickly.

How to checkmate the activities of voles

As luck would have it, there are several techniques for keeping away voles from a yard. However, the use of poisons and traps is seriously frowned at in some regions in the United States. So, first check with local authorities before taking actions against voles. When in doubt, use Nature Mace’s all Natural Mole and Vole repellent. It contains no harmful chemical, and is friendly on the soil.
