Frequently Asked Questions

  • Cat MACE is a humane, plant-based solution designed not to harm cats. When used as directed, Nature's MACE Cat MACE is safe for use around your family, pets, plants, and wildlife.

  • It depends. Cat MACE functions as a training tool and may require time and repeated applications to achieve the desired results. While it can repel cats instantly upon contact, do not expect immediate or conclusive results from just one or two applications—It is not a magical solution. Consistent and proper application, following the directions, is essential. Since every cat and situation is different, the product should be used repeatedly and strategically until the cat develops a negative association with it or changes its undesirable behavior.

  • Cat MACE emits a cinnamon and garlicky aroma that is tolerable to humans but naturally irritating to cats. Cats find the smell and taste of Cat MACE unpleasant and will avoid treated areas, seeking less bothersome environments.

  • Yes, you can use Cat MACE indoors and on patio furniture. Be aware that it may have a strong scent until it dries, so always use it in a well-ventilated area. If the smell is overwhelming, ventilate the room for about 15 minutes or until the odor dissipates.

Before applying it directly to furniture or painted surfaces, test it on a small, inconspicuous area to ensure it doesn't cause staining. If staining occurs, instead, apply the product to a cloth or towel, allow it to dry, and then place it on the area you wish to protect. Many customers use this method to safeguard countertops, couches, rugs, chairs, outdoor furniture cushions, and other delicate fabrics from cat damage.

  • Yes, Cat MACE's effects can diminish after rain. Although it is formulated with weather-resistant sticking agents, heavy rainfall can reduce its effectiveness. We recommend reapplying Cat MACE after heavy rain or watering to maintain its potency.

Nature's MACE product being used outdoors

Directions For Use

Shake well before every use. Apply daily for the first 7-10 days. Initial applications should be frequent and heavy to discourage bad behaviors and create new habits. Repeat applications as necessary or on a semi-weekly basis thereafter as the animal’s behavior changes. Apply liberally to areas where cats defecate, rummage, loiter, claw, etc. The goal is to train cats and change their habits.

Applications and results may vary depending on how ingrained cats’ habits are and how often they use an area. Whether or not it is a stray or domestic cat may affect product results. Typically, and especially for outdoor use, heavier applications yield better results. We recommend you buy the concentrate sprays for outdoor use, to cover more area. The concentrated cat repellents allow you to better control the strength and application frequency. For the concentrates, this product requires mixing with water in a lawn or garden application sprayer. See the back label for mixing ratios. Reapply after periods of heavy rainfall. This is not to be used as a perimeter application. Avoid heavy spraying of plants and grass. Nature’s MACE™ animal repellents are designed for use around homes, gardens, properties, etc. Do not spray directly at or onto animals. The product is only effective when used as directed.

Cat repellent spray/concentrate that customers said "works as advertised" for deterring cats from yards, gardens & indoor areas. Many report effectiveness after consistent daily use for 1-2 weeks. Strong garlic-cinnamon odor dissipates quickly. Mixed results noted - some cats unaffected. Regular reapplication needed for continued success.

  • Product works as advertised. Watched roaming cat avoid my porch bringing peace to my cats inside.
  • It was like an electric fence in a bottle. My cats quickly decided they needed to be anywhere else.
  • The vigilant use is 100% effective!

Nature’s Mace

We aren’t happy with this product. We used the granules for trying to keep the neighbor’s cats out of our gardens, using it daily to no avail. We used the spray to deter them from spraying our garage and front door, also to no avail. The first bottle of liquid had a broken sprayer nozzle, so the company replaced it quickly. It arrived today, also broken and the box was dripping all over the place from the front door to the kitchen sink. It didn’t even bother our own cats in the least bit.

Hi Cheryl,
Thank you for your honest review. We are sorry that your packages arrived damaged twice. I will follow up with UPS on this. I have issued you a full refund on your order. We are also happy to send an additional replacement since your first orders were damaged, let me know if you are still interested. Please keep in mind that Cat MACE is not instant action and in order to see good results daily applications are recommended for the first ten days and then weekly or as needed thereafter.

Don’t work on cats

I used both the granular and liquid forms and they don’t work. Cats just walk all over it like it’s not even there.

Hi Tim,
Thanks for your picture. Looks like you have a big problem the Cats. We recommend including an Enzyme cleaner in your routine. You need to remove the cat's scent, so they are less likely to keep returning to the 'territory.' The Enzyme cleaner will break down and destroy the urine, not just mask the smell. You will want to apply the mace Daily for at least ten days. Since the product is all natural it is important to build up enough of the repellent in the area, especially with that many cats coming onto your property. Please reach out to follow up for more tips and information.

Strong smell at first, and that is OK!

So far so good. The liquid concentrate does have a strong odor but dissipates fairly quickly.

False information not a good product do not

False information not a good product do not waste. Your money did not help at all as the cats ran around kept using my garden as their litter box sprayed it everywhere even on the mats that they come to hang out all these frail cats didn’t even phase them with that smell. The smell is bad for as human. It smells nauseating, but I want my money back. My husband goes. Don’t waste your time. Going to get it. You have to write up all these forms and I couldn’t find the receipt to take it back. I got it at Walmart would not waste my money again on this product or want anybody else to waste their time and money

Hi Margie, thanks for your review. We are sorry to hear that you were not pleased with the Cat MACE. Please provide your walmart Order ID and I will be glad to issue a refund per our customer satisfaction guarantee. No need to jump through hoops, just need that ID number. Please also keep in mind that Cat MACE is not an instant action product. We recommend daily applications for 7-10 days, heavily saturating the area, and then once a week thereafter with positive results starting usually after the first 7 days. Lastly, we understand the scent is strong. It is a scent based repellent so the strong scent is required in order for the MACE to work The strongest scent in the Cat MACE is cinnamon. Thank you for trying our products.

Found a better option less speedy in the end

It has a strong smell, and the sprayer on my bottle did not work, causing it to get on my hands, which is very smelly. Not to mention right after spraying there were cats in the flower bed. I went with an option that senses motion and lets off a frequency to scare animals away which works better.

Hi Samantha, Thanks for your review! We are glad that you have found a solution that works for you. We are also sorry to hear about the faulty sprayer and I am glad to send a replacement or issue a refund. Please reach out to customer service to follow up. Please keep in mind that Cat MACE is not an instant action solution. We recommend daily applications for 7-10 days with positive results after about a week.

Works like a charm -- kitties do no like it

I used a couple of other cat repellents that were spotty performers. I used Cat Mace according to directions and it was like an electric fence in a bottle. My cats quickly decided that they needed to be anywhere else. This stuff does the job!

EXTREMELY EFFECTIVE

I live in an area were there are a lot of feral cats that neighbors close to me feed. Needless to say there is a lot of cat traffic through my yard, and they leave their "calling card". The vigilant use of Nature's Mace for cats is 100 % effective!

It really works

The Cat Mace product really works. When the neighborhood cats use my yard as a bathroom, I clean it up, spray Cat Mac (~weekly for a few weeks, then less often) and they stay away!

Cat Mace works GREAT!

Outside cats always use my garden as a bathroom. I searched for a solution and found Natures Mace Cat Mace. I sprayed it about a month ago and (knock on wood) have not had an issue with cats in my garden since.

Happy Customer

I received the granules and I was still having a few intruders, but once I put the liquid into the soil I have not see any evidence of the the little pest returning. I can see where they have be investigating, but no mess of any kind. I don't know what the formula is, but you have a winner. The meat fact that you communicate with your customers speaks volumes of your integrity as a company.

This is additional to my other review

After looking at many of the other reviews, wanted to mention that we have used it as a training aid. We have a one bedroom apartment (the state we live in is very expensive.) My daughter has the living room as her “bedroom” and she has a room divider spread out for privacy. Our cat, who has had a lot of anxiety since we found him as a stray at 4 weeks old and is now almost 2 yo, climbs up these every night and usually knocks them down. As a kitten it wasn’t so bad but now at 14 pounds it’s not. For months we sprayed the whole thing before she went to bed and hours later he would knock it over. Now we use it when he acts up (which is a lot). He will sit outside my barely bedroom door (you CANNOT close a door in this place with him!!!) just far enough I can see his eyes and can’t spray him haha. It works better as a quick deterrent for him than did with leaving the spray there. Maybe it wore off? Or he’s got a bit of crazy in him!! I just wish it didn’t stain

Hey Jennifer, thanks so much for sharing your story—it gave us a smile! We're glad to hear Cat MACE has helped, even if your clever kitty is testing the limits (those “just out of reach” stare-downs are so real!).

It does sound like the scent may have worn off a bit, which can definitely happen over time. We recommend reapplying daily for a few days to rebuild that strong scent barrier—it helps remind him that the divider is off-limits.

If you’re running low, feel free to reach out! We’re happy to back our product with a satisfaction guarantee and would love to send you a complimentary bottle.

Hang in there—you’re doing great!

Cat MACE Cat Repellent and Training Tool - Spray or Concentrate

D
Darren P. (Ohio)

Absolutely 100% has zero effect on cats

Bought the concentrate, said it makes 5 gallons, so I mixed the entirety into a 2 gallon sprayer, made sure the concoction was thoroughly mixed and went to work on the observed paths my ferals take, zero response, walked through it, rubbed against it, really didn’t seem to care. I will say, when applied it smelled like strong cinnamon and garlic, after about an hour, the odor was gone, cats don’t seem to care, guess it’s back to live traps.

Hi Darren,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. I’m sorry to hear that you did not see the results you were hoping for with Cat MACE.

Cat MACE is designed as a behavior-conditioning repellent, not an instant deterrent. It works best when applied heavily and consistently over time. For best results, we recommend applying daily for at least 10 consecutive days, especially in areas where feral cats have established paths or territories. This consistent use builds up a strong scent barrier that discourages repeated visits. After the initial 10-day application period, reapply once a week or as needed for maintenance.

It’s also completely normal for cats to initially investigate treated areas. They may walk through, roll around, or even lick the application site. This behavior is part of their natural process of identifying new scents and marking their territory. While the cinnamon and garlic scent may fade quickly for us, cats—who have a far more sensitive sense of smell—can still detect it even after it has dried.

We truly value your business and stand behind our product. Per our 100% customer satisfaction guarantee, I’d be happy to send you a replacement bottle to try again using the suggested application method. Please reach out to our customer service team, and we’ll gladly take care of that for you.
