Deer Repellent RecipesDeer repellent recipes provide an inexpensive method for preventing deer from eating and destroying all of a gardener’s hard work.

There are numerous methods employed by homeowners everywhere to try to keep these destructive animals away from prized flowers and vegetables. Deer can even destroy trees by rubbing their antlers on the trunk. While fences are the most effective way to keep deer out of one’s yard, they are not always practical for every type of area, they can be expensive, require maintenance, and they aren’t always appealing to look at.

The best method of repelling deer is by using a deer repellent recipe that can be made right at home with only two ingredients and no more than five minutes. To make this repellent, crack one raw egg into one gallon of water and gently stir until they are blended together. The mixture can be poured into a spray bottle for spraying or dribbled directly onto any leaves and stems that have been eaten by hungry deer. This mixture will need to be reapplied after rain or sprinklers wash it off. If an egg mixture is sprayed directly onto any food plants such as raspberries or kale, extra care must be taken to wash them when it comes time to eat. Some gardeners recommend against spraying egg mixture onto the food part of plants altogether, instead recommending spraying leaves and stalks of tomatoes, and spraying around, but not on, leafy food plants like lettuce.

There are variations to this home recipe that can make it work even better. The first variation is to follow the same recipe, but before applying it to the plants, let it sit out for up to twenty-four hours so that the egg becomes rotten. Deer instinctively avoid eating any plant that smells like egg, and so the stronger the smell, the stronger the repellent. Certain scientific research has demonstrated that a deer repellent recipe made with egg solid, or cooked egg, instead of raw egg, is even more effective than the raw egg recipe. Using an egg solid will also reduce the likelihood of people or pets coming into contact with raw egg, which has been known to spread salmonella and other harmful bacteria.

It is most convenient to use a throw away container for the deer repellent recipe, such as an empty one-gallon plastic milk jug, or a liter soda container. On the other hand, a spray bottle makes it easy to apply, but makes for a messier clean up, especially when raw egg can sometime clog the spray mechanism of a spray bottle.

When making a deer repellent recipe, start with the two ingredients, try it out, and then experiment with some of added ingredients. For example, of the mixture does not seem to be adhering to the leaves in the garden, a tablespoon or two of vegetable oil or canola oil can be used to help. Spicy additions can be added to make it even more deterring to deer, like chili power. Finally, the solution can be made stronger or weaker by increasing or decreasing the amount of water per egg.
