Bed Bug Life Cycle

Bed bugs are nocturnal, reddish-brown insects that survive on the blood of warm blooded animals with humans inclusive. The insect lacks wings and they can perfectly stay hidden in places like beds, carpets, upholstered furniture and floor cracks since their body is controversially flattened.

Eggs

The life of the bed bug begins from the egg stage which looks like a grain with a milky white color. The mature female can lay up to five eggs in a day and can possibly lay up to 500 eggs before it dies. It can either lay a single egg or lay them in clusters and the eggs stay protected in the crevice. The size of each is likened to two grains of salt and it measures 1 mm in length. The eggs take approximately two week before it is hatched into immature bed bugs and they begin to feed immediately.

Nymphs

Before the immature bed bug or nymph attains maturity it under goes five molts. The main difference between the mature bed bug and the nymph is the size and sexual maturity as well as their color. The adult bed bugs are reddish-brown in color while the nymphs are yellow-white in color. The nymph must feed at each stage before it becomes mature. The nymph takes about five weeks to become mature under room temperature.

Adults

Once the nymph becomes mature then its feeding becomes weekly. They have a lifespan of 4-6 months. But a few of them can survive for a year with no food in a cool environment.
