A pest deterrent (also called pest repellent or pest repeller) is a substance designed to keep pets out of your lawn, garden, or even from you. Pest repellents do not generally kill or harm the unwanted critter. Instead, they work by irritating the critter to encourage them to find a different location.

They may also work by inducing fear into the targeted animal. For instance, coyote urine has been used in history to induce fear in deer, thereby keeping them away from your lawn and garden.

Do you really need pest control?

Finding a cute furry animal in your garden might seem like a welcome sight. But your garden plans most likely do not include offering an all-out buffet. This is what happens if you make your gardens accessible to these visitors. Before long, one stray animal brings a horde of others to wreak massive destruction on your gorgeous garden. Not sure how this happens? Consider these scenarios;

A single deer eats up to 5 to 7 pounds of plant food a day. They also have a versatile palate and will likely taste through dozens of plants in your garden to fill up. In contrast, a rabbit may not seem as big as a deer but will gnaw on everything they find, including almost any homegrown food crop, trees, shrubs, and even furniture, shoes, and wires.

Even so, some of these critters carry numerous diseases that may transmit to pets and people. For instance, tularemia (rabbit fever) can pass from an infected rabbit to humans through contaminated food or water, blood-feeding insects like fleas, mosquitoes, or flies, and by inhaling the dust from infected animal urine, tissue and feces. So, there’s also the added hazard of dealing with animal droppings around your garden.

What about pest repelling plants?

Nature equally provides a wide range of pest deterrent plants that can help drive unwanted animals from your garden. However, even as these plants may deter animals from your garden at the onset, there’s a good chance a hungry and more aggressive animal would overlook the irritating aspect of that plant and eat it. Again some pest deterrent plants become a problem entirely on their own. For instance, the oregano plant is known to deter rabbits. But while the rabbit may not eat the plant, they might see your oregano bush as a perfect nesting spot to avoid predators.

Types of pest deterrent products

Generally, you may have to choose between two main types of pest repellents; ultrasonic repellents and chemical repellents. Ultrasonic pest control devices claim to repel pests by emitting a high-frequency noise that will not affect humans. However, there has been too much controversy and almost no evidence to prove that these devices work. Your best and first line of defense should be chemical repellent.

These repellents work through sight, smell, and taste and have effectively kept unwanted critters away. You also have the pleasure of selecting non-toxic repellents specially formulated to keep you and your family safe while driving away undesirable animals from your lawn. Regardless, ensure to choose the ideal repellent clearly labeled for the target animal to achieve the best results.

Evidence also shows that combining your preferred pest deterrent spray or granule with measures to make your garden less attractive to wildlife provides the most robust protection. These measures may include:

  • Eliminating nesting areas and hiding spots such as tall grass and brush piles
  • Getting rid of crawl spaces beneath your deck or porch
  • Minimizing food sources by cleaning up food debris
  • Unclog your gutters and reduce build-ups of settled water
  • Installing physical structures such as fencing, chicken wire, and invisible netting.
