No matter how graceful and majestic the white-tailed deer looks, its better, we have those guys skipping our gardens. They eat several pounds a day and can eat many plants to the ground if given a chance.

Deer will mostly feed on grass, bark, twigs, alfalfa, fruits, and fungi. They aren’t too picky, and their diet does not remain constant all year long. Their diet most likely chances to meet the seasons’ demands and ensure they can eat what’s available. If you are adding nut trees, you may wonder if you have to protect them from deer. You might ask – do deer eat nuts?

Deer and their love for nuts

Deer eat a wide variety of nuts. In truth, nuts are found as one of their favorites. They usually eat them in the warmer months especially fall, while they prepare for winter. Deer will most likely eat hickory nuts, pecans, and beechnuts. Deer also eat acorns, especially those from red oaks. It’s one reason hunters use nuts like acorns to attract deer. As a grower, you wouldn’t want deer having a go at your nuts. Deer can also kill those trees by rubbing their bucks against them. So here are protective measures you can use:

Fencing

Fencing is one of the most practical solutions against deer. Your fencing must be about eight to ten feet high. However, it might become too costly to install an eight-foot-high fence if you have multiple acres to consider. You can also consider using deer netting or a short wall with fence extenders to keep them out. Outward sloping fence types are equally effective. They are, in reality, more effective than a purely vertical fence. If you opt for this solution, make sure to use a slanted fence of about 45-degree. In this case, the slanted fence does not have to be higher than six feet.

Electronic deer deterrents

You may also use motion-activated lights or sprinklers to keep them out. However, the effectiveness of this method wears out after a few days. Therefore, you need to rotate between scare tactics to keep them surprised. Ultrasonic deterrents can also keep deer away as they emit sounds at wavelengths only animals can hear.

Repellents

Repellents also offer solutions against deer. You can have odor or taste repellents, but we recommend using both at a go. You may also need two different mixtures. Rotating your repellents increases their effectiveness as you keep deer from becoming familiar with them. Make sure you don’t skip on your odor repellents, as they can also prevent deer from rubbing against your trees.

Protective structures

Tree tubes, tree shelters, bud caps, netting, and wire cylinders are also useful for protecting your trees. They are not expensive, but they are not permanent too. F you are using them, then you need to consider maintenance, installation, and removal. In some cases, you might be better off fencing your entire property than using individual protection.

Concluding thoughts

Do deer eat nuts? Yes, they do. Deer eats diverse nut varieties, especially during Fall. So you need to protect your trees from deer damage. Using the methods we just discussed, you can prevent deer damage. However, you need to combine at least two or three methods to get that adequate cover.
