You must first realize that bed bugs can infest any home. They don’t care about how spotless or filthy a room is. They only care about easy access to their favorite food source – humans!

But then, these bugs don’t have wings to fly. They move from place to place by holding onto human luggage from one place to the next. It can take just minutes for an infestation to spread, and it may grow in weeks or months.

How do bed bug infestations spread?

Consider that a single bed bug can lay between one to three eggs daily and over 500 eggs during its lifetime. Their eggs can be cemented into the most discrete surfaces and take about ten days to hatch. As soon as they hatch, they are called nymphs. Nymphs look like adult bed bugs and require blood meals as well. Depending on temperature and access to a feeding source, a nymph will go through its five molts in 100 days before mating, leading to more eggs and nymphs. Adults can live for up to 10 months without access to a host. So in about 1 to 2 months, a full cycle to a mature adult may occur. This equally paints the picture of how quickly an infestation can spiral out of control.

Over time, the few insects available feed on the host and go unnoticed. About 30 percent of the population is bitten anualy and will not show any physical symptoms, including bite marks. So, they can go completely unnoticed for a long time. But as the infestation grows, evidence builds up in the form of shed skins, eggs and feces at harborage sites. These harborage sites would occur in the most discrete areas near the feeding source. But as the males constantly mate with the females, the females begin to spread out into new areas, where they lay their eggs and begin new growth cycles. By that time, the infestation is notably large; it can be possibly discerned by the almost sweet odor that comes from a large number of fecal deposits and other secretions.

Inspection is the best first step to eliminating the infestation.

Now you have answers to the question – how long does it take to get an infestation; but then you realize that early detection is tantamount to dealing with these bugs as quickly as possible. That said, most people usually discover they are dealing with horrible bugs after having physical symptoms of bite marks. As said earlier, this isn’t the best way to figure out you have an infestation – the best is true inspection. You should periodically check for signs around your home. Once you’ve found any signs, treatment should follow suit as quickly as possible.
