It is highly imperative to keep chipmunks out of your garden flower pots. These critters like cats and squirrels like to dig in the dirt, eat bulbs and store food for the winter. Their appeal towards potted plants is the attraction of storage. Chipmunks love a mixed diet of roots, mushrooms, berries, seeds and nuts, alongside other materials they can find outdoors. When they find these food sources, they tend to look for places to bury their food for safekeeping, especially as winter approaches.
Therefore, they will have two incentives to use your flowerpots; for searching for food (cultivated bulbs) and then for storing their food. Chipmunks are also creatures of habit and will return to the same potted plants again and again to store their food. All that digging and burrowing doesn’t just mess up your plants but kill and cause damage. There’s nothing more awful than having your efforts unwittingly nimble or dug by chipmunks. So you need to take steps to keep chipmunks out of the garden.
Consider having chicken wire placed across the top of your potting soil. This is an alternative to wrapping the wire around the pot. Annuals from six-packs are usually small enough to plant directly through the holes of two-inch chicken wire. For larger potted perennials or annuals, you can snip the chicken wire to develop larger openings. Overall, you can train your flowers to grow through the holes and use landscape fabric pins to keep the wire secure and in place.
Make your potted plants unappealing to dig using the ‘bed of nails’ approach. This means using materials such as plastic utensils, upside-down nails, rocks, skewers, or stakes to keep them away. Chunky bark mulch or river rock can also be used to create a generous layer that also helps your potting mix retain moisture.
There are certain plants that chipmunks detest their taste, odor and texture. For example plants in the Narcissus genus such as daffodils. You can cultivate them as borders around your entire garden to create a chipmunk-repellent defense and protect your precious plants.
Chemical repellents are products formulated to help keep pests out of certain areas. You can find them as sprays or granules and they usually combine scent and taste to deter animals. For chipmunks, be sure to use products formulated for them. That way you have a repellent with scents and tastes tailored to make them so uncomfortable that they leave your potted plants and entire garden alone. However, it’s also important to choose a formula that is non-toxic and biodegradable. That way you can use it on your flowers and even edible vegetables without worries about poisoning your plants or even those pests.
